What’s the secret to making your new years resolutions stick?
Don’t make any! Kidding!!
Write it down, put it in your calendar, and work on it everyday.
Seriously, its that simple.
Last post I shared the books I’ve read that inspired me to be a better person, and this is part of what I’ve learned. So often I get in my own way. I put everyone and everything else first leaving nothing left for myself. Then I wind up bitter, sick, or both. Sound familiar?
I am definitely not perfect. I still haven’t figured out how to keep a healthy lifestyle, often overcommit myself, struggle with organization, and still am not very good at routines.
However, you are reading one of the results of my resolutions. It went from an idea that I needed something in my life other than music, to researching blogging while my son struggled to fall asleep, to writing a list of ideas, to posting 1-3 times a week, to what you see here.
You can do this.

But I hate writing things down!!
I feel you, but hear me out. When I was 13 I decided on my birthday that I would write down a list of things I wanted to accomplish by the time I turned 16. I wrote 6 things down, taped it to the underside of my dresser, and never read it again until my 16th birthday.
While I don’t remember everything I wrote down, I do remember that I accomplished 5 out of the 6 things.
If you’re curious, the only thing I didn’t accomplish was finding a boyfriend. In hindsight, I’m pretty sure I dodged a bullet there!!

My 2017 Resolutions
- Increase the influence of Shifting Roots on social media and in the community
- Practice self-care everyday.
- Feel more comfortable in my own skin, exercising regularly for endorphins.
There’s definitely more, but those are my big three. Exercising has never stuck for more than 2 years for me, so I need a reason that’s not about weight-loss and more about my mental health. I also have a busy year ahead that has the potential to run me to the ground, so self-care will be essential!!
Truthfully, I’m terrified to be even posting these up here.
What if I fail? Everyone will know!!!
No matter what, I’ll just keep scheduling these things into my calendar, and I’ll be that much closer than I was before.
